AUTOCAD TIME: 10 HRS

Describe some of the struggles with the various software you have engaged at this point.

I've discovered what type of geometry is appropriate for importation into AutoCAD. Because it doesn't handle mesh objects well, I've had to reestablish my expectations. Also, I've noticed quite a few differences between the 2015 version and the 2012 version which I had previously taken a class on. Adjusting to that has provided a few learning opportunities.

Discuss how you might use AutoCAD in your workflow.

I might use AutoCAD if ever I need to better appreciate other modeling software like Rhino and Solidworks. Otherwise, I think AutoCAD strength is allowing you to assign mates between parts. This allows you to define how one object is associated with another. For example, making parts flush with one another, concentric, or offset a certain distance.

Are you beginning to feel more comfortable with the machines and software? Please elaborate.

I believe I am beginning to feel more comfortable with the machines (I was able to use my knowledge to help fellow student recover her OS drive from a faulty HD to the new one) as well as the software. I've noticed myself analyzing projects and diagrams that I see by internally noting how I would use each software to create them. I believe this shows I've gotten a good taste of each software and how its applicable.

How frequently are you engaging resources outside of those provided and your classmates? Are you sharing these resources?

I continue to browse forums and search for videos online when I become stalled by a problem. I share what I know when others ask me about a problem, but I hadn't considered sharing resources on social media when I've found a solution. I will probably utilize social media for that in the future though.

You were required to experiment with the software more broadly in this assignment. What tools did you explore beyond what was shown to generate better graphics?  Discuss this process.

I explored how I could turn this "technical drawing" requirement into a more visually compelling document.  To do this I gained a better understanding of what the 'flatshot' command was capable of and discovered how to manipulate it to create my desired diagram.

I also played with importing more complex models. Here I got the opportunity to utilize the 'mate' command to organize pieces together. The work with the complex model didn't end up becoming my final document due to it's refusal to 'flatshot' complex geometries. Regardless, I learned a lot and had fun with the experimentation.
