RHINO TIME: 34 HRS
3DS MAX TIME: 3HRS
PHOTOSHOP TIME: 2HRS
REVIT: 40HRS
How effectively did the project enable you to develop your modeling and representation skills in Revit?
This project, while bazar in its face value, really helped me master the framework of Revit. I have a great grasp on what Revit is capable of and what its' intended purpose is now.
Describe the challenges that this project presented at the onset and during the process.
As always, starting from scratch on any new software is difficult. Revit was particularly difficult because it doesn't relate to any other software I've used. There is no software synonym for Revit in my repertoire. It took a while to grasp the Project to Family to Component to Sheet relationship happening in the software.
What resources were most effective in assisting you in developing your modeling skills?
The biggest resources necessary to get through this were time and patience. Besides that were my classmates help, more so to just listen to and relate to me about how frustrated I was, then offer suggestions on what to do within the software. Next would be videos from Dustin and Youtube.
Discuss the limitations of the software(s) and what challenges it presented in the development of your design.
Revit is not a 'design' software. It is a method of documenting design and a design component organization software. It is a capsule of things that have already been done, awaiting their time to be sorted.
Discuss your usage of the social media (YouTube + Facebook) reflecting on how useful each was to enable you to complete the assignment.
Facebook: great for getting into contact with classmates and instructors for help.
Youtube: used to get unstuck from seemingly impossible to escape problems.
How comfortable do you feel with the software?
On a scale from 1 to 10 I'd say I'm an 8. It was a really hard uphill battle learning Revit. I think I'm on the downhill slope now.
At this point are you using some of the developed skills in other course work? Please describe.
For this project I used Rhino, Photoshop, and 3dsMax skills I've developed from other classes and personal projects.
As an introduction to Revit, do you feel comfortable finding resources to enable you to further develop your skills.
I feel extremely confident that I know how and where to find solutions if I get stuck with Revit. And if I find my confidence ill placed, I know after this project I have the extreme self-initiative to find solutions regardless.

Beginning the revit robot Project

The first 5 hours of working in Revit were probably the hardest part of this project. But because of how many different software's I've began learning in this class, I have a pretty good idea of the emotional vs. productivity timeline to expect.
Hour 1: Total Confusion, No Productivity
Hour 2-5: Absolut Frustration, Negative Productivity due to lowered moral
Hour 6: Mental Breakdown, Walk away
Hour 7-12: BREAKTHROUGH, Good Productivity
Hour 13+: repeats pattern listened before but with milder lows and more productive highs
Here I am trying to import and mess around with a very simple model because I antcipate the struggle I will deal with in Revit. Gaining a taste of this frustration with the simple model with help me better manage my time in Rhino when I do begin modeling my robot. If I experience the steep learning curve of Revit first, I'll be more likely to understand I can't spend all my time modeling in Rhino.
The importance of this assignment isn't to have a perfectly modeled Robot in Rhino, it's to learn to manipulate Revit. I must use my time wisely and accordingly.
learning tips for transitioning rhino to revit

Because I chose to do this simple model experiment first, I discover some useful tips about scaling and layer organization in Rhino that will help me out later in Revit.
views are to sheets as film clips are to movie

I learn views are edited props that will soon be compiled into the finished product; the construction document package.

learning t-splines in rhino

I begin modeling my robot in Rhino only after I know what I'm up against in Revit. In Rhino however, I take the opportunity learn the T-Splines plug in. I learned so much making this robot's form with T-Splines I don't know if I'll ever be able to model in Rhino without it.

thinking ahead; materials and layers

Since I know I'll be adjusting document line weight and line color based on layers imported into Revit, I take the time to carefully address this organization in Rhino. Even so, I learned that you can't make components of one item two different layers and expect them to be independently manipulated in Revit later.

rendering diagrams with context

It took me a while to understand that renderings that are worth the time to make are actually really well thought out diagrams in disguise. After that revelation, I've learned to be more thoughtful about how I set up rendering shots.
Control room set up

While building the control room, I mastered the art of floating furniture and locking them onto floors they didn't belong on. Then, thankfully, I discovered what reference planes and building floors are in Revit and how to use them appropriately.

Taking a break from my sheet set up and annotation struggles, I took the time to Photoshop a rendering into a better representation of how my robot worked by using techniques from an earlier journal. My skill set is coming full circle.
